What is HeARTlands?

Why we created HeARTlands:

In 2025, limited opportunities to exhibit our own work locally provided the immediate catalyst for establishing HeARTlands. Around the same time we were offered the opportunity to deliver an exhibition for a new arts festival in our community, which we successfully did, and our HeARTlands exhibitions was born.

But rather than simply creating opportunities for ourselves, we asked the question - What if we created opportunities we could share?

We believe the arts can be extraordinarily generous, inspiring and transformative. But we also know that creative spaces can sometimes feel intimidating, competitive and exclusionary — particularly when you are emerging, shy, returning to creativity later in life, uncertain of your ability, or simply wondering whether you have earned the right to call yourself an artist.

We had experienced some of that ourselves and so we wanted to do things differently.

We wanted emerging artists to be able to sit alongside established artists without hierarchy or intimidation.

We wanted people to share knowledge rather than guard it; to celebrate one another's accomplishments while also being able to talk openly about failures, uncertainty and everything we learn along the way.

We wanted artists, writers and creatives to get together around the table, feel safe sharing their work and ideas, knowing that their contributions would be respected and acknowledged.

We wanted curiosity and collaboration rather than competition. A community led by heart, not ego. And we wanted there always to be room for one more chair at the table. What began with exhibitions quickly grew into something more.

A platform.
A creative community.
A place of connection and belonging.

Why we chose the name:

We chose the name HeARTlands because it speaks both to where we come from and what we believe in.

We are rooted in Longford, at the heart of Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands — a 12 county region of landscapes, waterways, ancient stories, small towns and rural communities that still hold so much waiting to be discovered.

We love Longford’s invitation to “Discover the Hidden”, because that idea is also at the heart of what we do.

We want to discover the hidden places, stories and creative traditions of our region — but we also want to discover its artists; the painters, writers, photographers, makers and storytellers quietly creating extraordinary work in homes, studios and communities, sometimes without the opportunities or audiences their work deserves.

HeARTlands exists to help bring that creativity out into the world.

And for us, the idea of a heartland reaches far beyond Ireland. Every country, region, county and community has its own heartlands — places shaped by landscape, history, legend, memory and the people who call them home. 

As HeARTlands grows internationally, we want to discover those places too: connecting our artists with creative communities across Europe and beyond, exchanging stories and exhibiting work inspired by the places that shape us.

But the name HeARTlands also says something about how we choose to work.

We do things differently here.

What distinguishes us is our ethos. We value artists at every stage of their creative journey — whether they are taking their first steps, returning to creativity after time away, developing their practice or already well established. Emerging and established artists are welcomed with the same warmth, respect and sense of possibility.

We believe in collaboration rather than competition, encouragement rather than gatekeeping, and in creating genuine, inclusive opportunities for people to connect, participate and belong.

We are not trying to be the loudest arts organisation in Ireland. We want to be one where people feel genuinely welcome, valued and included.

HeARTlands is a community of creativity, connection and belonging — artist-led, community-minded and, quite deliberately, led by heart.

And we are proud of that.
